Who am I?

My name is Hugo Ribeiro. I hold a BFA in Graphic Design and an MA in Design/HCI. My journey began in 2005/06 when I designed an interface for the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Lisbon, Portugal.

Since then, I've worked mainly in the academic, cultural, healthcare, energy, and fintech industries, crafting compelling user experiences and user interfaces and planning and executing end-to-end product design workflows while striving for visual and behavioural consistency.

Throughout my career, I have directly managed clients and collaborated with various stakeholders to help them achieve their goals. I have also been privileged to share my knowledge and assist others in growing their skill sets as designers and creatives.

My work principles

I believe in the power of research and that "any research is better than none."

Design is based on evidence and validation, not inspiration. Without research, design becomes guesswork. We have a variety of research methodologies that can be adapted to fit the scope of any project, enhancing both the product and the user experience.

Steve Krug's "Testing with one user is 100% better than testing with none" is my mantra.

Even a flawed test with the wrong user can provide valuable insights for improving a website or app. Usability testing doesn’t have to be resource-intensive; there are always tailored solutions that fit project constraints, leading to more user-friendly digital products.

Etan Marcotte's statement, "Accessibility is not a feature," resonates with me.

As a designer, I believe accessibility should be integral to the design process. Our assumptions about ability and disability can lead to poor products and user experiences. Incorporating accessibility is a fundamental part of my work on user interfaces.

What else?

A proud father of one, with whom I share a passion for Star Wars, Lego, and city-building games. A Xennial that had an analogue childhood and a digital awakening as he went through his late teen years. Passionate for his hometown of Porto unconditionally and crazy for FC Porto without actually being a big football fan and a very odd petrolhead that fulfilled a childhood dream a couple of years ago by participating in a team at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
